Module 4 โ€ข Lesson 2๐ŸŒ… Painting Light, Depth & Texture

A photobash is raw material; overpainting is where it becomes a world. You establish a single light and commit every surface to it, build distance with atmospheric depth, and add texture last โ€” always working value first, color second, the way painters have for centuries.

๐Ÿ‘ค The Goal: Give It a Sun and Air

๐Ÿง  Mental Model: Value First, Then Color

Painters solve the image in value (light and dark) before color, because the eye reads form and depth from value long before hue. A scene that works in grayscale will work in color; one that fails in grayscale can't be rescued by color. So you commit the lighting as values first โ€” where the sun hits, where shadow falls, how contrast drops with distance โ€” then glaze color over that solved structure.

Everything in this lesson serves one decision: where is the light, and how far away is each thing? Light direction gives you form; distance gives you depth. Nail those two and texture is just the final seasoning on a scene that already reads.

๐Ÿ—‚๏ธ The Overpaint Layer Stack

Keep the light effects on their own layers so you can tune each. A workable stack over the photobash: a shadow pass (Multiply) committing everything to the light direction; a light pass (Screen/Add) painting where the sun lands and the rim lights; an atmosphere pass (low-opacity haze color) for depth; and a detail/texture pass on top, only where the eye should land.

โš ๏ธ One light, no exceptions

The fastest way a matte painting falls apart is inconsistent light โ€” a fragment lit from the left dropped into a scene lit from the right. Pick the light direction first and repaint every element's shadows and highlights to obey it. Mixed light is the amateur tell that no amount of detail hides.

๐Ÿ”๏ธ Atmospheric Depth

Distance has a look (Intermediate Module 4.3): far things lose contrast, desaturate, lighten, and shift toward the sky's color; near things stay dark, saturated, and crisp. To paint depth, glaze the sky/atmosphere color over the background in increasing strength with distance, keep your darkest darks and sharpest edges in the foreground, and let the midground sit between. A scene reads as deep the instant its value range shrinks toward the horizon.

โœ… Detail is a spotlight, not a flood

You don't detail everywhere โ€” you detail where you want the eye to go. Concentrate texture and crisp edges at the focal point and let everything else stay simpler and softer. Even detail across the frame flattens the image and exhausts the viewer; selective detail directs them.

Step 1: Solve it in value ยท 12 min

  1. Temporarily desaturate the whole file. On Multiply and Screen layers, paint shadow and light to commit every element to one light direction.
  2. Check the grayscale reads as a lit, three-dimensional scene before adding color.

Step 2: Build depth ยท 12 min

  1. Glaze atmosphere color over the background, stronger with distance. Keep the foreground dark, saturated, and crisp.

Step 3: Glaze color & light effects ยท 12 min

  1. Bring color back; warm the lit areas, cool the shadows. On a Screen/Add layer paint god rays, rim light, and glow around the light source.

Step 4: Selective detail ยท 8 min

  1. Add texture and crisp detail only at the focal point (custom brushes from 4.1). Keep the rest simpler. ๐Ÿ†

  1. Light the same bash three times โ€” dawn, midday, dusk โ€” repainting the light and depth for each. Same geometry, three moods.
  2. Paint one scene entirely in grayscale to final, then color-glaze it. Learn how much value alone carries.
  3. Deliberately over-detail the background, then paint it back down. Feel how detail everywhere kills depth.

Going further: study a master landscape painting (Bierstadt, Turner) and map its value structure and atmospheric falloff. Painters solved these problems centuries before Photoshop.

How do I pick colors for light and shadow?

A useful rule: warm light means cool shadow, and vice versa, because shadows are lit by the ambient/sky. Sample your light color, then push the shadow toward its complement. It's the same cool-shadow/warm-highlight logic as cinematic grading.

My painting looks muddy. What happened?

Usually a value problem: your lights and darks drifted toward the middle. Desaturate and check โ€” if the grayscale is all midtones, push the range back out (brighter lights, darker darks) before touching color. Mud is almost always compressed value.
