Ps From Pro to Master

You already work like a professional. This course makes you a specialist: how color truly works, compositing that is optically indistinguishable from a photograph, agency-grade beauty and product retouching, matte painting, print production, real scripting and pipelines, and professional AI. The deepest course in the series, and the least forgiving.

πŸ“š What This Course Is

This is the third course, the sequel to the Intermediate course. It re-teaches nothing. Every module begins where "Practitioner to Pro" left off and either goes markedly deeper or opens a genuinely new specialist domain β€” the material that separates a senior operator from a working professional.

The teaching model is unchanged: project-driven and spiral. Every module ships a portfolio-defining deliverable, and the ideas that run all of Photoshop keep returning β€” now at the level of color science, optics, and production pipelines.

By the end you will be able to…

  • Reason about color science β€” scene-referred vs display-referred, linear light, 32-bit β€” and build a documented raw pipeline
  • Composite so an element is optically indistinguishable from the plate: light wrap, grain, CA, depth-of-field, displacement
  • Retouch beauty and product to agency standard, including chrome, glass, and liquid
  • Build environments with matte painting and digital art
  • Deliver print production: separations, spot color, halftone, packaging, PDF/X
  • Extend Photoshop with real scripting, plugins, and pipelines
  • Use generative AI professionally, with licensing and provenance handled

βœ… Prerequisite

The Intermediate course, or equivalent professional fluency: luminosity and channel masking, color management, high-end retouching, commercial compositing, design systems, automation, and multi-shot work. This course assumes all of it and moves fast.

🧭 Before You Start

Mastery work is unforgiving about setup. This is not a module β€” just the baseline every specialist assumes:

  • A calibrated, profiled display is non-negotiable here. Color science and prepress decisions are meaningless on a guessed screen.
  • Work high-bit, wide-gamut, and non-destructive by default. 16-bit (or 32-bit for HDR), a known working space, Smart Objects and adjustment layers throughout.
  • Keep references at hand. A plate, a grade reference, a real photograph of the material you are faking β€” masters check against reality constantly.
  • Know your output early. Screen, press, or large-format changes decisions from the first pixel. Diagnose the destination before you edit.

The full color pipeline is Module 1; production output is Module 5. This is just the orientation.

πŸ—ΊοΈ The Learning Path

Eight modules in four tiers. Alongside them runs a parallel Recipes III library for the hardest how-tos.

🟦 Deep Craft

The professional skills, taken to their technical limit: color, integration, and retouching.

Module 1: Color Science & the Raw/Linear Pipeline

Deliverable: a raw file taken to a wide-gamut, high-bit master with a documented, repeatable color pipeline.

Module 2: Photoreal Compositing

Deliverable: a composite where a pasted element is optically indistinguishable from the plate.

Module 3: Beauty & Product Retouching Mastery

Deliverable: an agency-standard beauty image and a difficult product shot (reflective, transparent, or liquid).

πŸŸͺ New Domains

Beyond editing photographs: make images from scratch, and get them onto a press.

Module 4: Matte Painting & Digital Art

Deliverable: a believable environment matte painting built from photos and paint.

Module 5: Prepress & Production Mastery

Deliverable: a print-ready package β€” correct separations, spot color, and a PDF/X a press will accept.

🟩 Pipeline & Future

Make Photoshop do the work β€” programmatically, and with AI, at a professional standard.

Module 6: Scripting, Plugins & Pipelines

Deliverable: a working panel/script plus an automated, headless export pipeline.

Module 7: AI Mastery & Provenance

Deliverable: a hybrid AI-and-hand image produced to a professional, disclosed, rights-clean standard.

πŸŸ₯ Mastery

Put it all together into signature work β€” and a career.

Module 8: Capstone β€” The Signature Piece + Career

Deliverable: a portfolio-defining signature project across specialties, presented with a senior case study.

↔ Recipes III

A parallel library of expert how-tos for the hardest tasks you will want to look up out of order:

  • "How do I neutralize a color cast in linear light?"
  • "How do I match film grain to a plate?"
  • "How do I build a duotone for screen print?"
  • "How do I write a batch export script?"

Each recipe links back to the module where the idea is taught in depth.

πŸ› οΈ Required Software

  • Adobe Photoshop (2024 or newer strongly recommended β€” Modules 6 and 7 use UXP scripting, Neural Filters, and current generative features).
  • A calibrated, profiled monitor is required, not optional, for the color and prepress modules.
  • Recommended: a pen tablet (retouching and matte painting), and sample raw files, brackets, and CMYK/print specs to practice against.

πŸ’‘ About the pictures in this course

As in the earlier courses, panels and dialogs are hand-drawn diagrams, not live screenshots, so they stay crisp and highlight only what matters. Before/after examples are real edited photos where the technique allows (color grades, grain and lens-blur matching, halftone and duotone); techniques that can only be shown as a process (matte painting, micro-retouching, separations) use clear labeled diagrams instead.
