Treat every AI tool as a fast, capable, unsupervised junior assistant: brilliant at the tedious 80%, unreliable on the last 20%, and never to be shipped unchecked. You hand it the heavy lift โ€” "colorize this old photo", "harmonize this pasted layer to the scene", "blur the background by depth" โ€” and it returns a draft in seconds. Then you do what a senior always does with a junior's work: check it, keep what's right, and fix what's wrong.

The one rule that makes this safe is non-destructive. Run filters on a Smart Object (as a Smart Filter) or output to a new layer, so the AI result is a layer you can mask, reduce, and correct โ€” never a baked change you can't undo. The assistant proposes; the original stays yours.

Each is a draft engine, not a finisher.

โš ๏ธ Neural Filters are drafts, not deliverables

Colorize invents plausible-not-true colors; Skin Smoothing can plasticize; Super Zoom hallucinates detail that wasn't there; Harmonization gets you 70% of an integration, not 100%. Every one is a starting point to correct, never a final layer to ship. Judge each at 100%.

๐Ÿฉน Correcting AI Artifacts

The hand-correction pass is where the money is. Common fixes: mask back the areas the filter touched that it shouldn't have (Skin Smoothing bleeding onto eyes/lips); reduce opacity when the effect is too strong; clone/heal the small hallucinated artifacts at edges and in fine detail; re-grade invented colors toward truth (Colorize); and add matching grain/sharpening so an upscaled or smoothed region shares the plate's texture (Module 2). None of this is possible if you baked the filter in โ€” which is why non-destructive is the whole game.

AI earns its place only when the draft-plus-correction is faster than hand-work from scratch. For a big colorize or a rough harmonize, it usually is. For a task you're expert and fast at, the filter's artifacts can cost more time than they save โ€” and the honest pro reaches for the manual tool. Use AI where it actually wins.

  1. Zoom in and list the artifacts: bleed, soft patches, hallucinated detail, invented colors, edge halos.

Are Neural Filters different from Firefly generation?

Yes. Neural Filters transform an existing image (colorize, smooth, harmonize); generative fill/Firefly creates new content. Both are AI, both are drafts to finish, and both are covered by the licensing and provenance rules in the next lesson.

Super Zoom "added detail" โ€” is that real detail?

No โ€” it's plausible invented detail, not recovered information. That's fine for upsizing a soft background, and dangerous for anything factual (a licence plate, a face, evidence). Know the difference: enhancement is invention, not truth.
