๐ค The Goal: Press-Ready, Not Just Pretty

๐ง Mental Model: Bleed, Trim, Safe
Every print job has three nested boundaries. Trim is the final cut size. Bleed extends the artwork beyond trim (usually 3 mm / 0.125") so that when the blade wanders slightly, there's still art to the edge โ never bare paper. Safe is an inner margin; keep text and logos inside it so nothing important gets trimmed off. Design so the background reaches bleed and the message stays inside safe.
The mindset shift from screen work: a printed piece is physically cut and folded by machines with real tolerances. You're not delivering an image, you're delivering manufacturing instructions โ which is exactly what bleed, dielines, and marks are.
๐ Dielines & PDF/X Export
Packaging adds a dieline โ the cut, fold, and crease lines the finishing machine follows, drawn on a dedicated spot layer (often named "Dieline", set to overprint, in a spot color) so it rides along without printing as part of the art. You design to the dieline's panels, then the printer's die and creaser use that plate. For delivery, Save As Photoshop PDF with a PDF/X standard: X-1a (flattened CMYK+spot, the safe classic) or X-4 (allows transparency/layers), embedding the profile and adding crop/bleed marks.
โ ๏ธ Preflight before you send
The last, non-optional step: preflight (in Acrobat Pro, or the printer's tool). It flags low-res images, missing bleed, RGB left in a CMYK job, overprint surprises, and ink over the limit. Two minutes of preflight prevents the expensive, embarrassing reprint โ always run it.
๐๏ธ Large-Format & Resolution
Big prints break the "300 ppi" reflex, because resolution should track viewing distance. A business card is read at 30 cm and needs ~300 ppi; a billboard is seen from tens of metres and looks perfect at 10โ20 ppi at full size. Setting a billboard at 300 ppi makes an unusable, gigabyte file for detail no one can see. The rule: fewer ppi the farther away it's viewed โ printers publish a recommended ppi per product.
Two more large-format realities: files often exceed the 2 GB PSD limit, so work in PSB (Module 5's linked-asset habits help); and huge pieces are printed in tiles or on roll media, so design with the seams and the finished mounting in mind. Build big-format at the size and ppi the printer specifies, not by reflex.
โ The printer's spec sheet is the real brief
Bleed amount, safe margin, ink limit, preferred PDF/X flavour, resolution per product, dieline template โ the printer has all of it, and it varies by shop and press. Getting their spec sheet first and building to it is the single most professional prepress habit. Guessing is how reprints happen.

Design a simple package panel or a card. Get (or invent to spec) a dieline and the printer's bleed/margin numbers.
Step 1: Set the boundaries ยท 10 min
- New doc at trim size + bleed (add 3 mm all around). Add guides for trim and a safe margin inside it.
- Extend background art fully to bleed; keep all text inside safe.
Step 2: Add the dieline ยท 10 min
- On a spot layer named Dieline (spot color, set to overprint), draw the cut/fold/crease lines. Design your panels to it.
Step 3: Confirm resolution & color ยท 8 min
- Check ppi against the product/viewing distance. Ensure the file is in the press CMYK profile (Lesson 5.1) with spots intact (5.2).
Step 4: Export PDF/X & preflight ยท 8 min
- Save As Photoshop PDF, PDF/X-4 (or X-1a), press profile, trim+bleed marks, spots preserved.

โ Common Questions at This Stage
Isn't packaging really an Illustrator/InDesign job?
Structure and vector dielines often live in Illustrator, and multi-page layout in InDesign โ but the imagery, effects, and image-heavy panels come from Photoshop, and Photoshop exports perfectly good PDF/X. Knowing the prepress rules matters regardless of which app draws the box.
What if I can't get the printer's specs?
Use safe defaults โ 3 mm bleed, ~3 mm safe margin, a standard coated CMYK profile, ~300 ppi for close viewing, PDF/X-1a โ and state your assumptions when you deliver. But chase the real specs whenever you can; defaults are a fallback, not a substitute.
